June 2026 Newsletter - Christ Above All Things

June 12, 2026

And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. The end of May marked the end of the Easter Season at Pentecost (May 24th). Following Pentecost we celebrated and will celebrate Trinity Sunday (May 31st), Sunday in the Octave of Corpus Christi (June 7th), and finally Word of God Sunday (June 14th). This wonderful time can be thought of as the Season of the Church. In this season we focus on the mysteries of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, The Body and Blood of Jesus, and Holy Scripture. In fact, the Church Herself is a mystery

In fact, the Church Herself is a mystery, a Divine reality that is historically visible yet spiritually invisible. St. Paul said: This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the Church. (Ephesians 5:32 RSV) In these mysteries we find the totality of our being as Christians. In the Holy Spirit we have the life of the Church. In the Holy Trinity we find the aim of the Church. In the Body and Blood of Jesus we have the food of the Church. In the Word of God we have the illumination of the Church.

Life, Aim, Food, Illumination, wonderful places - literally, locations where we find inspiration, inclusion, beauty, nourishment, and light. Too often we think of the Church only as a building or an institution. While both are important expressions of the Church, they do not exhaust her reality. We must look beyond these visible markers and learn to rejoice in the Church's deeper mystery. We enter more deeply into that mystery through prayer, asking God's blessing upon her faithful people. We enter it through the study of Scripture, seeking to understand God's plan as we journey toward together. Above all, we enter it through our communion life, where Christ continually unites us to Himself and to one another.

When we live in this way, Christ is not simply one influence among many, but our true Lord. Our beginning and our end are found in Him. The word preeminent comes from a Latin term meaning "to rise above." Let us therefore allow Christ to rise above all things in our hearts
