School of Christian Living (SOCL)
The School of Christian Living (SOCL) at Holy Name of Jesus is not just Sunday School. Rather, it is a process of teaching, growth, relationship building, and training for applying Jesus to our lives every day.
Our process involves consistent modeling in Christian life. This is demonstrated by the example of parents in church. Their children are at their side and are not sent off separately. It also includes parent freedom to join in the classroom. This approach builds on Jesus’ vision of a community of faithful Kingdom people.
We use various approaches that incorporate tools matching the learning styles of students. We stress the joy of the Christian life, not guilt and shame.
Our SOCL includes studies for Sacramental preparation (First Communion and Confirmation) at the appropriate ages. If your child has not received certain of the Sacraments we will work with you to fit them right in.
There is absolutely no cost to attend and join. The parish also fully support annual summer camp and biennial Youth Convocations at no cost to parents. We also offer scholarship opportunities in music and in other areas.
Our 2025 – 2026 SOCL classes are underway. Class takes place Sundays after 10am Holy Mass. Your child/children can start at any time.
Summer Camp (Camp Kurs)
The Church funds a summer youth camp, Camp Kurs, in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. It is located in Waymart, Pennsylvania at the Bishop Hour Retreat and Recreation Center. The parish fully pays for youth attendance at this camp. Our pastor, Fr. Jim Konicki, is the Chaplain at Camp Kurs. Camp Kurs lasts from seven to ten days and is for children and youth ages eight to seventeen.
Youth Convocation (Convo)
Every two years the Church holds a five-day Youth Convocation. This Convocation is for young people ages eleven through twenty-one. The Convocation is focused on spiritual maturity. Nationally recognized speakers and Church leaders offer insights into fully living the faith. Convocation also features fun outings and a major community service project. The parish fully pays for youth attendance at Convocation.
Scholarships
The Church’s National United Choirs organization offers annual scholarships for youth and adults taking paid music lessons. These include voice lessons. Scholarships are also available for those taking courses in music at college or university. Applications for scholarships are due each May 1st. To date, over $358,000 in scholarships have been awarded.
