Reflection for the 16th Ordinary Sunday 2026

July 17, 2026

“Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” We are to live faith actively, a faith that permeates every aspect of our lives. Jesus continues to discuss those traits we are to necessarily integrate into our lives. Last week we began our study of a series of parables Jesus offers. We hear the next ones today and will hear more next week.

“Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.”

We are to live faith actively, a faith that permeates every aspect of our lives.

Jesus continues to discuss those traits we are to necessarily integrate into our lives.

Last week we began our study of a series of parables Jesus offers. We hear the next ones today and will hear more next week.

Parables are an illustrative way Jesus uses to describe God’s Kingdom and how we are to attain to the Kingdom.

When they get back to where they are lodging, the Apostles ask Jesus what His parables mean. He explains the parable of the wheat and the weeds.

Naturally we focus on the conclusion of the explanation. The wheat are the children of the Kingdom and the weeds are the children of the Evil One. At the conclusion of the world there will be absolute accountability.

Those who fed the world with God’s word and spirit will go to heaven, those who sowed evil, well their outlook and destination isn’t too great.

Simple enough to understand, but the question is – How do we get there, to living a faith that permeates our being? How do we turn out to be that wheat?

The first step was our baptism through which we entered the life of God. We were reborn or regenerated into a new life, the life of the wheat.

From there, with the help of God’s grace received through the good we do and the sacraments we receive, we work to walk the path Jesus laid out. We live what is in the Gospel. Love of God, love of neighbor, the actions we take because we have the life of God in us. Actively lived faith is core values demonstrated each day.

We are also offered reassurance because we know we fall short at times. God offers us patience, the opportunity to repent and live rightly. Our Psalm response tells us that the Lord is good and forgiving. St. Paul tells us that our needs, including our need for growth, is brought to the Father by the Holy Spirit Himself.

As such, let us have confidence in both God’s help and mercy that help us continuously grow in living our faith actively.
